NEW! 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.  Letter writing workshop to protect the Hassayampa River. Join ecologist and conservation advocate Joe Trudeau, Consultant to The Wilderness Society, for an evening workshop that celebrates the Hassayampa River and concludes with attendees writing a comment letter in support of the Forest Service’s draft Environmental Assessment evaluating the proposed protections.  The Hassayampa River is one of the Prescott National Forest’s most important riparian ecosystems, providing habitat for tiger salamanders, lowland leopard frogs, the Arizona toad, and the threatened Mexican spotted owl. Plus, it’s a local’s favorite for its sculpted granite swimming holes. The Hassayampa is also in the crosshairs of gold miners who use devastating suction-dredge mining systems to destabilize the river channel which destroys aquatic habitat and releases heavy metals into the water. To protect this irreplaceable treasure, the Prescott National Forest has prepared a draft Environmental Assessment that evaluates the proposed 20-year mineral withdrawal. Registration NOT requiredLOCATION: Natural History Institute, 126 N. Marina St., Prescott.
